Honda Fit Service
Honda introduced the Honda Fit in the mid-2000s right as the latest wave of skyrocketing gas prices hit the buying public hard in the wallet. It was an immediate hit with cash-strapped car buyers. The sub-compact four-door hatchback earned accolades for having top-notch engineering and design combined with excellent pricing and gas mileage. The second and third generation Fit models have continued to be popular with consumers, as Honda has tweaked the original model.
The Fit won the Car of the Year in Japan when it was introduced in 2001, and outsold the Toyota Corolla by December 2001. Honda introduced the US production model in January 2006 at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, before releasing it as a 2007 model year car in April 2006.
The Fit is manufactured and sold worldwide, with total sales exceeding five million by mid-2013. Honda pioneered a new interior space concept with the Fit, calling it a “monospace” or one-box space. This allows the Fit owner to reconfigure the interior cargo space as needed to compete with larger cars when hauling things vs. people. The Fit looks nothing like other Honda vehicles or even other cars in its class for this very reason.
The fuel tank rides under the front seat, and the rear suspension is particularly compact. This allows the rear seats to fold particularly low, making the cargo area very flexible and regularly shaped. Compared to its nearest competitor, the Toyota Yaris hatchback, the Honda Fit offers nearly twice the storage space behind the rear seat.
The second generation premiered in October 2007 at the Tokyo Motor Show, where it again won Car of the Year in Japan. The newer generation was slightly longer and wider than the first generation. Honda introduced the Fit EV, a limited production all-electric version in the US in July 2012.
With the third generation, Honda has used an all-new platform using 27% of the body construction from ultra-high strength steel. This saves weight while improving safety in the construction of the frame. Honda made advances to the suspension, which again improved interior passenger and cargo space. A new, more powerful direct injection engine was another addition to the 2015 model year Honda Fit.
The third generation Fit is slightly shorter than the second generation, but has a longer wheelbase, roomier cabin and nearly five inches more legroom due to a rearranged cabin layout. The maximum cargo space is 57 cubic feet. This new third generation debuted on the US market at the 2014 North American International Auto Show, and went on sale in June 2014 as a 2015 model year car. It is the smallest Honda offering, but the Fit passenger space is nearly the same size as the larger Honda Civic sedan.
