Honda S2000 - A Little History on Your Car
Produced from 2000 to 2009, the Honda S2000 was a classic roadster in every sense of the word. Featuring only two seats and minimal cockpit comforts, the S2000 ran on a suspension ready for the track. Sports car and serious driving enthusiasts loved it.
Honda debuted the S2000 as a concept car in 1995 and the first production version rolled off the line in 1999 to honor Honda’s 50th anniversary. Honda claimed the S2000 had the world’s best high performance naturally aspirated 4-cylinder engine.
In the 2007 model year, Honda introduced a second trim model in the United States, the second being more track-oriented than the original. The S2000 Club Racer added performance and decreased weight and amenities. It debuted at the New York International Auto Show in April 2007.
Honda anticipated producing fewer than 2000 cars for that model, but ended up only building 699 for the last 2 years of the S2000 combined. The S2000 was doomed by the 2008 auto industry crisis, which saw a 74% decline in sales for the sporty roadster. Honda stopped production of the S2000 in June 2009.
Before the end, though, the S2000 sold nearly 111,000 units in its 9-year run. During that time, it racked up numerous awards, including ranking four times on Car and Driver’s 10 Best lists. It was the J.D. Power and Associates highest ranked model in the Vehicle Dependability Study three times for its class of Premium Sports Car, and was ranked #1 in the BBC Top Gear Survey three times, as well.
The Honda S2000 received the US News and World Report “Best Affordable Sports Car” award in 2008 and 2009, and was rated by Road and Track as one of their Best All-Around Sports Cars. In 2004, 2005 and 2007, Edmunds Consumers called the S2000 one of the Most Wanted Vehicles. Jalopnik named the S2000 one of the Best 10 Cars of the Decade.
