Honda Pilot - Facts about your SUV
The Honda Pilot was introduced to the North American market in 2002 and remains the largest SUV available from the automaker. It is technically a mid-sized crossover SUV, featuring three rows of seating. Passenger areas in the Pilot are appropriate for adults, and the second and third rows of seats fold flat for increased cargo space.
The Pilot is manufactured in Honda’s Lincoln, Alabama plant. It shares a platform with the Honda Odyssey minivan and the Honda Accord sedan. Thanks to the nature of the construction and suspension, the Pilot handles more like a car, yet it is strong enough to handle some towing and off-road activities. It has a towing capacity of 4500 pounds and ranks in the middle of its class in fuel economy and pricing.
It replaced the Honda Passport in the automaker’s lineup in 2003 and quickly became a favorite with buyers. The Pilot sold over 100,000 units during just its 2nd year in production. The Honda Pilot seats eight, and it is seen regularly on the “Best SUV” list in Car and Driver Magazine.
The second generation of the Honda Pilot debuted in 2008 with cosmetic changes making it look more rugged. The Kelley Blue Book likes the Honda Pilot for its excellent resale value, too. The newer Pilots are longer and roomier than earlier models, with additional legroom notable in the rear seating area. Drivers report handling and maneuverability are also better with the newer models.
There are plenty of trim options and accessory packages available on the newer models, with bells and whistles designed to keep every family happy and busy on long trips. It gets decent gas mileage for a large SUV, which is another draw for SUV drivers. Many Honda Pilot owners appreciate the roomy cargo space without the minivan appearance.
